Volkswagen Crafter Diesel Particulate Filter DPF

A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a device that captures particulate matter from the exhaust of your Volkswagen Crafter's diesel engine. Unlike a catalytic converter, it targets solid particles that need to be burned off periodically to prevent the system from becoming clogged.

When this light appears on your dash, it means your particulate filter is filled with soot and hasn't been cleaned through regeneration. The system is alerting you to take corrective action before it leads to further damage.

Begin by helping the system trigger a successful regeneration cycle — typically by driving at steady speeds for 20–30 minutes. If that fails, a mechanic can perform a forced regeneration. Once cleaned, you can reset the system using a diagnostic tool.

DPF issues often stem from:

• A low tank level during regen
• A failed sensor

These prevent proper regeneration, leaving your filter blocked over time.

You can try:

• A sustained drive to initiate automatic regeneration

Note: Severely clogged filters may require full replacement.

The system raises exhaust temps to burn off soot during normal use — usually when the engine runs near 2,000 RPM. If conditions aren't ideal, it can't complete the cycle, and the filter remains clogged.

While DPF delete kits with downpipes exist, they're only legal for off-road use. Modifying emissions systems on road-going Volkswagen vehicles is prohibited in many areas. Krosfou does not recommend or support illegal delete solutions.

Watch for:

• P2459 – Regeneration happening too often
• P246300 – Excessive soot, indicating a blocked filter

Both typically require diagnosing the root issue, such as a failed sensor or incomplete regen.

With proper care and regular service, a Volkswagen Crafter DPF can last up to 160,000 km. Keeping your fuel tank at least 1/4 full and driving consistently helps ensure successful regeneration.
